Newry City centre was crowned as Northern Ireland’s Rising Star, at the Government-run Great British High Street Awards last week, in partnership with Visa, in Edinburgh.
The city was commended for its innovative use of technology and creative initiatives, which helped secure £5,000 for the local community.
Newry BID manager Eamonn Connolly Eamonn nominated Newry for the Rising Star Award last year after efforts to restore civic pride while generating optimism to overcome challenges facing the high street with the judges particularly impressed with the Newry VIP Shopper campaign, a text loyalty scheme, aimed to help drive footfall and sales from existing customers.
The Newry VIP initiative launched in August 2019, when Péarlaí introduced its technology in over 70 shops, stores and cafes across Newry, giving retailers access to data that has never been available before, whilst giving shoppers access to countless all year round discounts.
The initiative has been a great success in Newry, with over 7000 VIPs now using their fobs in their favourite stores across the city.
Local businesses have also been praising Péarlaí’s technology, with Ann Summers Store Manager, Philippa Sterrit, commenting on the benefits of using it in a recent Q&A session with us “Definitely engage with technology because you can further understanding of your customers through Péarlaí, and you can convert those window shoppers into customers through it.”
Péarlaí CEO, Peter McCaul, was delighted that his company’s technology could play such an instrumental part in Newry’s success at The High Street Awards:
“This award really does help put Newry’s High Street on the map and give it the recognition it deserves. Newry BID works tirelessly in its efforts to revive, adapt and diversify Newry’s high street. And when they teamed up with Péarlaí last year to launch the Newry VIP initiative they offered full backing from the very start and great support in raising awareness to local shoppers.
“It’s great to see that all parties efforts have been rewarded, and I’m sure there will be much more success for Newry’s High Street in years to come, the city’s high street has been recognised as a rising star, and I’ve got great faith it will shine brightly for a long time when it rises to the top.”
